The mission

Ram Rajya, in this project, is approached as a practical architecture of responsibility — a society in which institutions and citizens possess both the means and the obligation to improve the life immediately around them. Working thesis — section 22, closing vision

Both statements are taken unchanged from the original concept paper. Everything on this site is an attempt to work out what they would mean in practice.

Where it came from

Two working papers — one in English, one in plain Hindi — set out a model for organising public life around population-based local units connected to regional and national networks. They covered twelve areas, from the community fund to the university networks, and ended honestly with a list of unresolved questions.

This site is version 2. It keeps the structure of those papers, resolves several of the open questions, and adds mechanisms the model needs in order to survive contact with reality: a workable legal form, a sliding contribution with a labour alternative, sortition against elite capture, a privacy architecture a critic can verify, published failure modes, and a set of permanent prohibitions.

Four areas being added were not in the original papers at all: political reforms, our relationship with nature and animals, social evils and rehabilitation, disaster management, community safety and global trade units.

What this is

A proposal addressed to government and citizens alike, as guidance for achieving something together.
Designed to be run with and under government. Without that support it is not feasible, and this site does not pretend otherwise.
Open for suggestion, correction and disagreement — particularly disagreement.
Published under open licences so anyone can take any part of it without asking.
A seed. If someone wants to plant it, it is theirs.

What this is not

Not an official programme of any government, at present.
Not affiliated with, endorsed by, or campaigning for any political party.
Not a fiscal, legal or administrative blueprint. Every rupee figure is illustrative and needs a demographer and a finance department before it means anything.
Not finished. Several pages are outlines waiting for their concept to be written, and they say so.
Not neutral about its own foundations — Sanatan principles of duty and service are openly at its core, and its delivery is unconditional and open to every citizen. Both halves are stated rather than one being hidden.

On the name

Setu means bridge. The model is a series of bridges: household to neighbourhood, neighbourhood to cluster, cluster to nation; a person in need to a person who can help; tradition to evidence; one language to another.

Ram Rajya is used here as the ideal governance system of a civilization — a society in which both the state and the citizen hold the means and the obligation to improve the life immediately around them. Not a memory of a golden past, and not a slogan. A standard to be measured against.

How this site is built

Plain HTML, CSS and vanilla JavaScript. No framework, no build step, no dependencies, no analytics, no cookies, no tracking, no external fonts and no third-party requests of any kind. It loads on a slow connection on a cheap phone, anyone can read its source, and it will still work in ten years.

Text size, dark mode and high-contrast mode are all adjustable from the header, and the settings are remembered in your own browser and nowhere else.
